A, a well-known pharmaceutical product for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, has been seized by police.
It was valued at over £15,000 as of 2023. The seizure is the latest enforcement action against pharmaceutical companies in South Africa to curb their sale of and marketing of illegal prescription drugs, which are commonly used to treat the condition.
The seizure is part of a massive police investigation into the drug industry in South Africa, which began in 2006.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) seized more than £14,000 worth of the drug, which had sales of more than $16,000.
It was reported in December that an anti-impotence drug, Viagra, had been used to treat a male patient suffering from erectile dysfunction, which is a common condition in South Africa and its associated medicines.
According to a news report, the drug was sold in stores across the country and it was found that it contained the active ingredient sildenafil citrate, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction.
A spokesperson for the NCA said: “The NCA is working with our Enforcement Officers to catch illegal drug companies and to stop their sales and marketing of the erectile dysfunction drug.
“We will continue to monitor the pharmaceutical industry to ensure that they do not become profit-driven and take profits away from the drug companies.
“In addition, we will continue to look into any other suspected drugs that could have potentially dangerous side effects and to make sure that they do not become a source of income.
“The seizure of the pharmaceutical product will continue in line with our ongoing enforcement strategy against the sale and marketing of illegal prescription medicines, which is a matter of public concern.
“As a result of the seizure, the NCA will continue to look for other suspected drugs to stop the sale and marketing of the erectile dysfunction drug, which will take priority over the drug in our enforcement strategy.

A man in his 30s was sentenced Monday for buying a fake Viagra in his shopping district.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Monday at the High Court, where he faces a maximum sentence of up to 20 years in prison.
